Alcohol Limits for Drivers

The legal blood alcohol limit in Portugal is 0.5 g/l. This is roughly equivalent to one large beer or two small glasses of wine. For new drivers (less than 3 years of license) and professionals, the limit is stricter: 0.2 g/l.

Penalties are severe. Between 0.5 and 0.8 g/l is a serious offense (fine + license suspension). Above 1.2 g/l is a crime, resulting in immediate arrest and a court appearance.
