What is NISS and Why You Need It?

NISS (Número de Identificação da Segurança Social) is your social security number. It is mandatory if you plan to work or pay social security as a freelancer.

You can apply for it online through the Segurança Social Direta portal. It is usually processed within a few weeks and sent to your registered address.
