IMT: The Property Transfer Tax

Unlike the annual IMI, the IMT is a one-off tax paid before signing the deed (Escritura) to buy a house. The rate is progressive and depends on the property value, location, and purpose (primary vs. secondary home).

For a permanent home costing €200,000, the IMT is roughly €5,000. However, recent 2025/2026 measures have introduced exemptions for young people (under 35) buying their first permanent home.
