Marriage Regimes: Assets & Debt
If you marry in Portugal without a prenuptial agreement, the default regime is "Comunhão de Adquiridos". This means assets bought after marriage are shared, but what you owned before remains yours.
You can opt for "Separação de Bens" (Total Separation), which is mandatory if one spouse is over 60. This choice affects not just divorce, but also inheritance and liability for your spouse's debts.
