Can Landlords Ban Pets?

Contrary to popular belief, landlords in Portugal can legally include a "no pets" clause in a rental contract. While the law prevents blanket bans in condominiums, private rental contracts are based on mutual agreement.

However, if the contract does not explicitly forbid pets, the landlord cannot evict you later for getting a dog or cat, provided the animal does not disturb the neighbors or damage the property.
