The "Prato do Dia" Economy
Eating out for lunch is often cheaper than cooking at home if you know where to go. Look for the "Prato do Dia" (Dish of the Day) menu. For €8 to €12, you typically get soup, a main dish, a drink (wine included), and coffee.
This is distinct from the tourist menu. It is usually written on a paper tablecloth or a chalkboard outside. It's how locals sustain themselves, offering high-quality, freshly cooked traditional food at a fixed low price.
