The 13th and 14th Month Salary
In Portugal, annual salaries are typically divided into 14 payments rather than 12. Employees receive a Holiday Subsidy (Subsidio de Férias) in summer and a Christmas Subsidy (Subsidio de Natal) in December.
When negotiating a salary, always clarify if the offer is "Gross Annual" or "Monthly Net". If it is monthly, ask if it includes the subsidies (duodecimos) distributed throughout the year or if they are paid in bulk twice a year.
