Speed Limits & Average Speed Cameras

Standard speed limits are 50 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on national roads, and 120 km/h on highways. Portugal has recently introduced "Velocidade Média" (Average Speed) cameras.

These cameras record your entry and exit time between two points to calculate your average speed. Slowing down just for the camera won't work. Look for the specific traffic sign (H42) indicating these zones to avoid expensive fines.
